Official launch by the Minister
The Hon. David Kelly MLA, Minister for Water, Fisheries, Forestry, Innovation and ICT and Science within the WA State Government officially launched the CSC. He spoke of the importance of innovation, commercialisation and investment in helping achieve enhanced economic growth and employment.
Academic perspective: What is commercialisation?
Professor Tim Mazzarol gave a talk about a review of academic research into commercialisation providing a definition and an explanation of why it is important to the long term economic success of a national economy.

Panel Discussion
Peter Clarke facilitated a lively panel discussion focussing on the financing of a commercialisation project with panellists Sheryl Frame, Mark Pivac, Julian Ilich and John Mackinnon. This engendered some good question and answer exchanges with the audience.
Sheryl Frame
Commercialisation Adviser at Entrepreneurs Program
Sheryl Frame is the Commercialisation Advisor with the Accelerating Commercialisation element of the Entrepreneurs' Program. Sheryl’s expertise is in new business development, strategy, sales and marketing specifically in the healthcare, biotech and technology sectors. She is a director of SpringBoard Enterprise Australia, StartupWA and Women in Technology WA (WITWA). She was on the Executive Board of Australian Women in IT, Science and Engineering (AWISE). She has a degree in physiotherapy from Witwatersrand University in South Africa and systems engineering experience with IBM. Her career includes engineering, sales, marketing and management and commercialising new technologies.
Mark Pivac
Executive Director and Chief Technology Officer FBR
Mark Pivac is the primary inventor of Fast Brick Robotics (FBR)'s automated bricklaying technology. He is an aeronautical and mechanical engineer with over 25 years' experience working on the development of high technology equipment ranging from lightweight aircraft to heavy off-road equipment. Mark co-founded FBR with his cousin Mike Pivac in November 2015. Raising funds through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) provided Mark and FBR with initial funding and provided a ready source for further capital raising. Mark can explained the processes he had to undertake as FBR prepared for the IPO and how this accelerated their development phase and focussed their business.
Julian Ilich
Managing Director & Co-Founder Tiller Rides
Co-Founder and Managing Director of Tiller Rides. Julian Ilich is an experienced founder, Startup CEO, Engineer, Designer and Sustainability consultant. The company was founded in Fremantle in 2016 with the aim of improving the well-being of people, the planet and the community through the design and development of low cost, low stress, healthy and sustainable urban transport. This has taken the form of an innovative electric bicycle. Julian’s recent journey raising capital has focussed on using Equity Crowdfunding, a very recently developed investment option. Julian has experience on how to prepare if you think this is your preferred pathway.
John Mackinnon
Investment Director, Jolimont Global Mining Systems
John has over 20 years experience in equity research and corporate finance focused primarily on the global mining industry and global commodities. His most recent role in banking and corporate finance included Managing Director, Head of Metals and Mining for Deutsche Bank where he was advisor on a number of Australia’s largest mining cross border deals. Prior to that John was Head of Deutsche Bank’s European Company Research as well as Global Mining Company Research head, based in London. John graduated from Macquarie University and the University of Ballarat and holds a B.Eng (Mining) and Post Graduate Diploma in Geoscience (Mineral Economics).
